Gr…eight Win To Cross Country Team
Last year our secondary cross country team made it the ‘Magnificent Seven’, this year we extended it to an emphatic eight straight titles as District Champions in the Secondary Cross Country. This tremendous achievement now re-writes the record books for FCAC as the most successful sporting team in our short history. The competition was extremely strong with FCAC struggling to match the other schools in the first four races. At one stage we were over 50 points behind and it looked like our dominance of the event was coming to an end.
What transpired over the next six races was an unbelievable courageous effort by our athletes who ran themselves to the near point of exhaustion to give it their best shot. Surrendering our title was never in their minds as they dug deep for their team, while managing to retain the Overall Champion title. Unfortunately in the intense competition we did lose the Junior Shield for the first time in three years by just over thirty points.
Our success was highlighted with some outstanding individual results, with Samantha Fitzgerald (17 year girls), Bonnie Barr and Kara Wise (tied 16 year girls) all taking out age champions in their respective age groups. The depth of our team results could see as many as 15 FCAC runners selected in the Fraser District Team to go the Wide Bay Trials which will be held on the same course on the 2nd June. Other top ten finishes went to Jai Lambden 5th in the 13 boys, Amber Maxwell 5th and Alexi Core 10th in the 13 year girls, Riley Gill 7th in the 14 year boys, Ella Kleinschmidt 4th and Elizabeth Robbins 10th in the 14 year girls, Declan Wharton 4th and Toby Bridge 5th in the 15 year boys, Rebecca Leigh-Taylor 2nd in the 15 year girls, Nicholas Williams 4th, Mark Tregaskis 6th and Duncan McGrouther 9th in the 16 year boys, Jennifer Aspinall 9th in the 16 year girls, Ben Andrews 2nd in the 17 year boys, Julia McNeilly 3rd and Dannii Martin 9th in the 17 year girls, Christoph Krohn 4th and Nick Deordio 8th in the 18 year boys and Chloe Keenan 4th in the 18 year girls. All of which contributed greatly to our teams success as well as our other 100 or so competitors.
Overall Results:
Percentages 1st – FCAC, 2nd - St Mary’s, 3rd - Xavier
Junior 1st - Xavier 471, 2nd - FCAC 436, 3rd - St Mary’s 328
Senior 1st - FCAC 407, 2nd - St Mary’s 340, 3rd - Xavier 311
Overall 1st - FCAC 843, 2nd - Xavier 782, 3rd - St Mary’s 663
We wish all the best to our students competing at the Wide Bay Championships that will held on the same course at the Senior College on the 2nd June.

2009 Secondary Cross Country Results
What a day! Beautiful conditions for racing and some hot competition set the scene for the usual fierce inter-house rivalry that we have come to expect for our cross country carnivals. Over 320 students challenged the elements, themselves and celebrity runners for ultimate supremacy in the classical endurance event of athlete against the clock.
Orion were defending champions, but it was Andromeda that took control in the early races claiming the first two age champions for the carnival. It was a sign of things to come with Andromeda taking out three more, making it five out of ten that were available. Orion could only ponder what could have been claiming two age champions, but not having the overall depth to remain competitive falling to an usual last place overall.
As usual we had excellent participation and I congratulate all participating students for getting out and having a go. Both the 3 and 4 km courses were challenging on the day in the hot conditions. House spirit was strong with resounding war-cry’s throughout the morning and students and staff alike cheering their competitors over the line.
Celebrity runners this year showed that they have been looking after their fitness over the last twelve months. This year we had staff members Mrs Wendy Buttsworth, Mrs Sally Whelan, Mr Mark Shields, Mr Tony Wood (Principal) and past student Alex Kruger all giving chase. Most gave students up to one minute head start, with Mr Wood, Mr Shields and Alex still finishing in the top half dozen places. Our thanks go to these celebrity runners for their effort and spirit in joining in. The challenge to the students is to beat the celebrity runner home for bonus house points.
Students that finished in the top 10 have been selected in the school cross country team to
help defend our title as District Champions at the Fraser District Secondary Cross Country Championships.

Fraser District Athletics Carnival
Cold conditions, injury and sickness didn’t stifle the efforts of the secondary athletics team competing at the Fraser District Championships last week. With a number of students out injured and sick, the traditional FCAC spirit of digging deep came to the fore and they competed strongly against the best in the District. Kelsey Hamill smashed the old discus mark in the 16 year girls by over 4 metres, recording a best throw of 38.75m. Kia Middleton was also in exceptional form taking out the 14 year girl’s age champion.
Overall the team performed strongly against schools that are much larger than FCAC. In the Champion school stakes we were narrowly beaten in to 3rd place, 3rd in the Senior and 2nd in the Junior sections. FCAC took out the Percentage Shield section, which compares school size with points scored. At the end of the day our relay teams showed outstanding combinations winning 3 and being runner up in 4 age groups.
Students selected in the Fraser District Team to go to Wide Bay Trials on the 4th & 5th September:
Maddison Taubert - 1st High Jump
Ajuma Ogiji - 2nd 100m, 1st 200m

Andromeda too strong in Athletics Carnival.
Orion took control early in the pre-run events taking an early lead and looking the goods to take out another athletics carnival. At the conclusion of the first ½ day carnival Andromeda and Orion were joint first place with 1724 each and setting the stage for an epic battle for the full day carnival. As the day unfolded Andromeda proved too strong taking out the overall champion house by 99 points.
War Cry Week once again had all houses gathering to blast the sound meter and prove who had the most house spirit. Houses selected their own theme song based on epic movies and when played over the school PA system during lunch breaks house groups assembled at CMC to perform a War Cry. They were awarded points based on volume, clarity and total numbers in attendance. Andromeda for the second year in a row took first place.
The traditional march pass, this year in epic movie themes (which some may question how epic), saw students dressed as superheroes, pirates, ogres and disney characters in an attempt to generate extra points for house spirit. Leading overall house spirit for the day was Centauri.
As usual the competition was highly spirited and hotly contested. While the weather may not have been the best for the pre-run events it was perfect for setting records on carnival day. Kelsey Hamill and Nicole Brazier broke 2 records each, Beau Morris, Maddison Taubert and Deinma Dede one each. Records for 2008 were:
16 yrs Boys 1500m - Beau Morris: 4:48.60.
14 yrs Boys Long Jump - Deinma Dede: 5.66m
13 yrs Girls High Jump - Maddison Taubert: 1.35m
16 yrs Girls Discus - Kelsey Hamill: 37.88m
16 yrs Girls Shot Put - Kelsey Hamill: 10.89m
